Wood Policy and Innovation Conference – Governance and policy: best practices in public support tools and initiatives
As the EU works towards becoming climate-neutral by 2050, wood has become increasingly important as a replacement for energy-intensive materials. In the built environment, using wood can significantly cut carbon emissions, turn cities into carbon sinks, and store carbon in buildings for the long term.
To achieve this, the public sector plays a main role in creating favourable conditions. Through governance, policies, and support tools, public entities can accelerate the adoption of wood in construction, driving demand for sustainable building materials, stimulating innovation, and supporting employment across the value chain – from forest management to finished construction products.
Such successful practices from the public sector will be presented and discussed at session A, “Wood Governance across Europe: Enabling Frameworks and Policy Initiatives”, of the Wood Policy and Innovation Conference on 7 November in Brussels. This session will be hosted by the Bioregions Facility and the European Wood Policy platform (WoodPop). Through insights from national and regional perspectives, the session explores enabling frameworks and policy initiatives that support the broader bioeconomy transition.
Among the national best practices of public support tools for wood-based construction are the Czech Wood Policy Programme, Austrian Wood Initiative, and Swiss Wood Resource Policy. These initiatives show how governments can promote the sustainable use of wood and support local economies. On the regional level, the session will showcase Galicia’s public procurement approach for sustainable buildings and the use of wood in social housing projects in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Join us at the Wood Policy and Innovation Conference on 7 November to explore how governance can shape the future of a sustainable wood-based construction industry. Gain valuable insights, network with leaders, and contribute to the bioeconomy transition in Europe. For more details about the programme, please visit the Conference webpage.
