Wood Governance Across Europe: Enabling Frameworks and Policy Initiatives

As the EU aims for climate neutrality by 2050, wood plays a key role in shaping Europe’s sustainable future by replacing fossil-intensive and non-renewable materials. In the built environment, using wood can significantly cut carbon emissions and store carbon in buildings for the long term.

In this context, the public sector is crucial in creating the right conditions for this to happen. Through governance, policies and tools, public entities can help speed up the adoption of wood in construction, drive demand for sustainable or bio-based building materials, stimulate innovation and support employment across the value chain – from forest management to finished construction products.

This report introduces six best practices presented at the “Wood Governance Across Europe: Enabling Frameworks and Policy Initiatives” session, organised by the Bioregions Facility and WoodPoP, at the Wood Policy and Innovation Conference, which took place on 7 November 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. It highlights regional, national and pan-European initiatives supporting wood-based construction.
