Hybrid symposium “New Wood Uses: Birch for Building with Wood and the Bioeconomy in NRW”
September 5

Climate change and ongoing forest damage pose considerable challenges to the Forestry and Wood Sector in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany.
How will the raw material base change in the future if the forest future is characterised by reforestation and the establishment of climate-stable forests? In this context, the pioneer tree species birch plays a key role in the reforestation of forest areas damaged by storms and bark beetle infestation.
To demonstrate the potential of birch originating from NRW, the Team Wood-Based Industries of the ZWH of the Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW has investigated the possible uses of the tree species birch for building with wood. In addition to preliminary investigations for its use in glue lam, a two-story demonstrator for building with birch is currently being realized.
The demonstration structure and exhibition stand will be presented at the Hybrid symposium “New Wood Uses: Birch for Building with Wood and the Bioeconomy in NRW” on 5 September 2023 at Zentrum HOLZ.
