Baskegur: investments in woodworking industry in the Basque Country, Spain

As the cluster representing the Basque forest and timber sector, Baskegur aims to support sustainable forest management, encourage innovation, and help promote wood as a renewable resource internationally. Baskegur looks at companies involved in the first stage of wood processing that are expanding into new markets and companies in the second stage of processing using private investment funds for further development. For example, Ebaki XXI’s main products include boards, finger-jointed wood, pallets, and pellets, significantly contributing to the regional timber processing industry. They recently received an investment of €23 million to expand its production capacity. Egoin Wood Group is the largest timber manufacturer and builder in Southern Europe. Its portfolio includes cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam, and timber frame construction. Recently, €25 million was invested in acquiring an extension for the new CLT plant. In addition, Gamiz Group is a major player in European laminated oak production, particularly profiles and glulam beams. Private investment improves facilities and operations. Serreria Larrañaga specialises in large-sized coniferous timber for beams. The company has benefited from private investment funds, showcasing how family-owned businesses in the sector can attract private capital to continue their business. Among these cases, there are various ways of raising funds, such as private capital investment, bank financing, and a Basque government aid programme.
